About the Principal...

I’m enormously proud of having worked at Cabrillo Middle School (CMS) for twenty years in three capacities; teacher, vice principal and principal. My amazing association with staff and the parent community has allowed me to play a role in helping to develop an instructional program which has always put safety, academic performance and children just being happy and playful in the forefront.

CMS students boast their highest API (Academic Performance Index) in its history on the CSTs (California Standards Tests) as we move into the new Common Core Curriculum with the Smarter Balance assessment system.  More CMS students are enrolled in higher level math classes (Geometry and Algebra) which helped us earn a six year accreditation from WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) and two CMS staff members were recognized as Santa Clara Unified School District (SCUSD) Certificated Employees of the Year in the past four years (Karen Joesten and Mary Pat Phillips). CMS has distinguished itself as a wonderful place for middle school students at the heart of Santa Clara.

With our new office, the campus has been completely remodeled and we are awaiting a vote by the Board of Trustees of the SCUSD to see if we are to become a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Learning Center.  These are exciting times at CMS and I’m thrilled to be part of it.
