8th Grade Science and 8th Grade STEM Science

Introduction:

Welcome 7th and 8th grade science! Are you excited about what is around you? Well, you should be! Whether you enjoy doing kick flips on your skateboard, snowboarding at Squaw Valley, or riding roller coasters at Great America, you are all using Science on a daily basis. Have you ever wondered how your skateboard lands safely under your feet after you ollie? Have you ever thought about what forces are acting on a roller coaster as it loops, bends, and turns? Well many of these questions can be answered by doing what scientists have done for thousands of years. OBSERVE!

Scientists observe the world around them, just like you do. For that reason, whenever you make an observation, you are acting like a scientist. But scientists do more than just observe. They ask questions to know why things happen the way they do. Scientist attempt to find answers in their questions through years of testing. They are determined individuals who put forth their best effort to learn. So take some advice from the scientists, put forth your best effort to learn, be determined, observe, question, and find out for yourself!

Standards Covered:

  • The Next Generation Science Standards as well as the common core state standards will be used in my curriculum throughout the year.

Classroom Rules:

  • Be Respectful
  • Be Responsible
  • Many other rules can be derived from these two rules, which we will discuss later.

Consequences:

  • The following consequences will be assessed if the classroom rules are not followed.
  1. One verbal warning
  2. After school detention
  3. Referral and parent contact

Grading & Evaluation:

  • Students will be evaluated on labs, projects, homework and tests.
  1. Assignments (Labs, Projects, Class work, Homework, Science Logs, etc.) ~60% of your grade
  2. Tests and Quizzes ~40% of your grade
  • Grading scale:

100% - 94% (A) 83% - 80% (B-) 69% - 67% (D+)

93% - 93% (A-) 79% - 77% (C+) 66% - 64% (D)

89% - 87% (B+) 76% - 74% (C) 63% - 60% (D-)

86% - 84% (B) 73% - 70% (C-) Anything lower than 60% is an F

A Little About Me

Who:Mr. Hori

What:What do I teach? 8th Grade Science. What is Mr. Hori like? I consider myself easy going yet energetic when it comes to teaching; strict but fair; stern but not mean. What do I do for fun? I enjoy being outdoors whether it is surfing, fishing, snowboarding, running, camping, hiking, or hanging out with my family and friends at the beach!

Where:Where is my classroom? Room 5. Where was I born? I was born in Hilo, Hawaii. Where did I grow up? 8 years in Hawaii and the rest in Redwood City, CA. Where did I go to college? San Jose State University, GO SPARTANS!!! Where do I live? I currently live in Santa Cruz. 

When:When did I start teaching? I have been teaching science at Cabrillo since January 2003. 

Why:Why do I teach? Being in education, not only do I have the pleasure to interact with children, but it allows me to learn more about myself, my students, the people I work with, as well as the wonderful world around us!

How:How do I teach science?I belive students learn best through inquiry where students are free to question and test their own hypothesis. I believe they learn best by "doing" (getting their hands dirty) and learning from their mistakes.

Below are the basic minimum information that is required in a conclusion and next steps. Both should be written clearly, in paragraph form, with no grammatical mistakes and with proper transition words and sentences. 

Conclusions should include a minimum of these 4 things:

Introduction Sentence: State whether or not your hypothesis came true. 

Claim: What you thought was going to happen. 

Evidence: Numerical (numbers) data that supports what happened in your experiment.

Reason: A scientific reason that supports why your experiment turned out the way it did.

Next Steps:

State whether or not your experiment makes sense to you.

State some experimental errors that may have affected the results of your experiment.

Explain some new questions that came about during your experiment.

State what you will do next now that you know what you know.
